And we might not be able to be human in time," said W. S. Merwin, who will succeed Kay Ryan as the nation's 17th poet laureate. Merwin has long been an engaged speaker on behalf of the environment. In 1992, he gave a speech on the Wao Kele o Puna, the largest remaining lowland rainforest in Hawaii—which, through the efforts of local activists like himself, has since become a protected habitat.
