[Poetry Chaikhana] Rabia Basri (Rabia Al-'Adawiyya) - I have two ways of loving You:

Here's your Daily Poem from the Poetry Chaikhana --

I have two ways of loving You:

By Rabia Basri (Rabia Al-'Adawiyya)
(717 - 801)

English version by Charles Upton

I have two ways of loving You:
A selfish one
And another way that is worthy of You.
In my selfish love, I remember You and You alone.
In that other love, You lift the veil
And let me feast my eyes on Your Living Face.

Simple contentment

Hi Omss -

Rabia, sometimes called Rabia of Basra or Rabia al Basri, was born to a poor family in Basra in what is now Iraq. Her parents died of famine and she was sold into slavery.

The story is told that her master one night woke up and saw a light shining above her head while she was praying. Stunned, he freed her the next morning.

Rabia chose a solitary life of prayer, living much of her life in desert seclusion.

Her fame as a holy woman spread and people began to journey to her retreat, to ask advice, to study, to learn.

Today she is greatly revered by devout Muslims and mystics throughout the world.

This brief poem by Rabia reminds us that simply thinking of the Divine is not enough, because in doing so we still retain ourselves. The busy mind perpetuates itself in thought while telling itself it is virtuously thinking of holy things. No, unselfish love of God is allowing ourselves to be completely vulnerable, hiding nothing, withholding nothing. In doing so, we allow the eternal presence to "lift the veil" and see us truly, intimately, as we are. And in being seen, we finally see. We perceive the Divine Face everywhere, and we ourselves are lost in that vision.

Have a beautiful day!

Ivan

5 Tips for Healthy, Hassle-Free Food

by Marie Horrigan

A habit is the act of doing an action, over and over, usually without thought. We asked several nutrition experts about their best (and easiest) lessons for getting in the habit of cooking healthy and eating right. As Jennifer Iserloh, chef and author of "Secrets of a Skinny Chef," said about making healthy diet changes: "There are easy ways you can do it even before you start cooking."…Keep reading

DarkPoetry Poem of the Day: The Lonely Way

The nightmare it scrapes at my temples again
I can't let it free, I can't let it free
The scream that it builds at my throat yet alive
I can't let them hear, I can't let them hear
The angels that rip me apart from inside
The devils above, The devils above
Pattern of scars from my own self-delusion
The wisdom I see, the wisdom I see
A map on the skin of my prophetic form
I follow it blind, I follow it blind
The path that I walk on has no company
The place not alive, the place not alive
