Dear Associate Member,
The Society wishes you all the best for the New Year and we look forward to further progress in our Aim of raising awareness of the problems caused by the irregularities of English Spelling. An overriding consideration that unites us with all who are concerned with improving literacy is the acquisition of spelling competency or in other words accurate spelling.
Accurate spelling is the gateway to reading and literacy. However there are problems in acquiring this skill and it is the purpose of the Society to take a close interest in what those problems are and how they might be overcome. Currently this is by raising awareness of the problems.
At the last Committee meeting in October, the Committee took the decision to call the Society The English Spelling Society and I hope you are in agreement with this.
What would make your membership complete is joining as a Full Member and being able to vote both with regard to the direction of the ESS, its constitution and bringing members on to the Committee.
To that end I would be grateful if you could help me by indicating what level of annual membership fee you would find acceptable, remembering always that Life Membership will be ten times the annual fee.
Please email your reply to the Secretary, Julie Clayton at ja.clayton@btinternet.com
I would be happy to pay an annual fee of £
This could be anything from £1.00 or more (double for Euros and US and Australian dollars)
To continue the work of the Society, we are always ready to accept donations and it is largely our good fortune to have had these in the past and it is these have kept the Society going.
Thank you for reading thus far. Your reply will be most helpful and the results will be published in late January, 2011.
Yours sincerely
Jack Bovill
Chair, the English Spelling Society
