PIW 1 December 2010

In our penultimate issue of PIW this year, Indian editor Arundhathi Subramaniam introduces a stunning selection of poems, some from the PIW archives and some new to our pages. All centre around the theme of 'migration', which brings with it a host of associations: nostalgia, hope, loss, dream, exile, home, rootlessness and flux.

The issue features an interview with the late Sindhi poet Popati Hiranandani about what it means to be a Sindhi in post-Partitition India, damned to a life of eternal landlessness. Also included are two of Hiranandani's Sindhi poems, marking the introduction of the twenty-first language onto the PIW India domain.

Indian-born, New York-based Vijay Seshadri investigates the fraught legacy of migration in his poems, and there',s work too by Indo-Fijian writer Sudesh Mishra, who traces his roots to the Indian immigrants shipped to Fiji in the early part of the twentieth century to work as indentured labour.

Arundhathi has also compiled an archive tour of migration-themed poems from the PIW India domain and from across the PIW archives.

Poetry Can Newsletter December 2010

Poetry Can NewsletterDecember 2010
Frost

Welcome to the December Poetry Can Newsletter.

During the past couple of months Poetry Can has been working on an exciting upgraded website. We've been adding to the useful information that can be found on the site and updating the look and feel of it. With a bit more work the site should be going live early in the New Year.
The web address will still be www.poetrycan.co.uk and we'll be giving you further information about the changes and launch in the next Newsletter.

In the mean time, wrap up warm, snuggle up with a good poetry anthology and have a glass of mulled wine at hand.

See you in the New Year!

Poem of the Month

The Scattering

I cast you into the waters.
Be lake, or random moon.

Be first light,
lifting up its beggar's cup.

I scatter your ashes.
Be the gale teaching autumn
to mend its ways,
or leopard so proud of his spotted coat.

Be the mentor of cherry trees.

I cast your dust far and wide,
a sower broadcasting seed:
Be wild rose or hellebore or all-heal.

Descend as a vein of silver,
never to be seen,
deep in the lynx-eyed earth.

Rise as barn owl white as dusk;
dove or raven marvelling at his flight.
Know different delights.
