Welcome to the June Poetry Can Newsletter

I could no more wish for a life without music than I could wish for a life without breath...

The Poetry Can and St. George's are pleased to present an exhibition of poems that explore the relationship between music and poetry.

With poems by : Pameli Benham, Rachael Boast, David Briggs, Dalia Chowdhry, Gillie Harries, Shabana Kausar, Dorothy Lindsay, Bhavna Mistry & Adibah Iqbal, Pat Simmons, Aroona Smith, Katharine Towers, Cathy Wilson inspired by music and from those places music and poetry inhabit in all of us.

The poets in this exhibition all live in Bristol (with the exception of Katharine Towers, who will be reading with Rachael Boast and Douglas Dunn at Bristol Poetry Festival in September 2011).

This exhibition is running now, so come along to have a look.

The Poetry Can new website is now live at: www.poetrycan.co.uk

It is full of useful information and has a completely new look, however we are still uploading information to some sections of the site, so please be patient if what you are looking for isn't there yet.

Poem of the Month

The Art of Fugue

'Fugue must perform ... work with continuously
shifting melodic fragments that remain in the "tune"
sense perpetually unfinished.' - Glenn Gould

The violins pronounce their notes with care,

as if they are a question.

The flutes concur and answer in shy voices.

This is a beautiful subject. It bears repeating

by more solemn instruments, which yawn

and clamber to their feet: yes, they suppose they feel the same.

There's a sudden clamour of delight

that things could be so simple:

the clean white sail of a tune making everything good.

If they could find a way to make an end,

they would do it now, using their own words.

Reviews: HOW TO MESS UP AN AT HOME DRUG TEST FOR MARIJUANA?

HOW TO MESS UP AN AT HOME DRUG TEST FOR MARIJUANA?

Question by KK:
How to mess up an at residence drug test for marijuana?

I have a buddy who smokes weed and his parents just made the decision to commence drug testing his urine. If he tests constructive they are going to send him to boarding school. Is there anyway he could “mess up” the test or make the THC undetectable such as adding bleach to the urine? This is a easy at residence test, not at a lab so it would be a lot easier to manipulate the final results and get away with it. Any guidelines would be appreciated. Thank you
his parents sort of watch him whilst he is peeing so it would not be feasible to use a person else’s urine

——————————————

Answer by T. T.
tell Him to get some clean urine from a person else.

Answer by Kristenann
Yes. Like the other person stated. Get clean urine from one more kid. & I heard that putting a salt packet I am your urine makes drugs undetectable. I’d go with the clean urine though. It’d be gross but worth it.

Answer by ?????
add 4 drops of bleach..

Funny Poem of the Week by FunnyPoets.com

a href='http://www.funnypoets.com'>FunnyPoets.com Your funny poem of the week is:

Ringo Blues

Copyright; Graham Fredriksen
From his book 'Paradise Revisited'

He's bought himself a set of drums -
Seems that's the latest fad
For them with teenage craniums
Just to annoy their Dad.
So now it's straight into his room
When he gets home from school:
A raucous thunderous sonic boom -
Could make die dead rise from die tomb
...And those alive to fear their doom -
A racket dial is cruel;
An audio nightmare of gloom
As decibels and senses zoom,
My ears and I can now assume...
That Ringo's on his stool.

As drums resound and cymbals crash,
The airwaves saturate;
Bush poetry's a culture clash -
He says I'm out of date.
His hair is fifteen shades of blue...
He only wears what's cool...
He bangs away the evening through...
He says I wouldn't have a clue...
But oh!! that noise!! I'm tellin' you...
When Ringo's on his stool!!

With peace and quiet vanished now
From in our neighborhood,
I get no more milk from the cow,
The dog's left home for good,
The chooks have all stopped layin' eggs,
The goldfish left his pool,
The cat has even found his legs,
My home-made beer has turned to dregs.
Is that a tune ? - the question begs...
When Ringo's on his stool.

The ducks from on the billabong
Have all flown south for Spring;
No more we hear the magpie's song -
He's lost his urge to sing.
T.V.'s a relic of the past -
Those drums win every duel;
Not even ghetto-blasters blast
As loud or even half as fast...
While ear-drums flutter at half mast...
When Ringo's on his stool.

The Flick man has no need to call -
Our cockroaches have gone;
The termites that live in the wall -
They too are moving on.
It could well drive a man to drink...
But who am I to fool ?
I have already crossed that brink -
I cannot hear myself to think -
And oh...this week, his hair is pink...
That's Ringo on his stool.

So I thought I would be the bird
And grow myself some wings,
Until today...! got the word
That somehow changes things.
The music shop is on the phone:
This afternoon it comes -
An instrument that's all my own -
He need no longer play alone -
We'll form a band that's all home-grown
I'm flexing up my gums;
Though I'm tone-deaf as any stone,
I'll join the raucous monotone -
Me playing my new saxophone...
While Ringo...plays his drums.
