Pennies From Heaven

Young Mary had a penny and the little girl was itchin'
To tell her mum where it was from, she ran into the kitchen.
"Oh Mummy Mummy!" Mary cried "I've earned myself some money."
Her mother took time from her chores and said "Where's that from Honey?"

Said Mary, "Well some boys from school, there wasn't very many,
They asked me to climb up a tree, then paid me this here penny"
"Oh Mary!" cried her mother, "Those boys are just dirty trickers,
They paid you to climb up the tree to see your frilly knickers"

Young Mary was quite taken back, she hadn't seen their schemin'
Her lip popped out and down her nose the tears they started streamin'.
But next day, as oft' children will, she went to do her schoolin'
She reckoned she would teach them boys who were upon her foolin'

She ran home from school at days end, from ear to ear was smilin',
Another penny in her hand, her mother's nerves were trialin',
"I've earned another penny Mum", cried little darling Mary,
But the words her mother used you won't find in your dictionary.

"Young Mary!" screamed her mother (I'll leave out her nasty swearin')
"They paid you to climb up the tree to see the pants you're wearin'"
"But Mummy" said young Mary "I quite shrewdly earned my penny,
You see I tricked 'em this time Mum..... I wasn't wearin' any"

We all want to conserve energy, but because so much of our lives depend on electronic equipment, we can often feel as though conservation is like losing weight-really hard to do!

But, what if you could reduce your electric bill by 10 percent a year just by eliminating "phantom power?" What is phantom power you ask? Phantom power is the current that electrical items continue to draw even when they are not in use. Cell phone chargers, computers, TVs and other electric items all suck electricity even when we're not using them. [Poetry Chaikhana] Around the World 2010

It's been a couple of years since I last sent this note. It still stuns me. I thought I'd update it and share it with everyone again...

From it's beginning, I have given the Poetry Chaikhana web site the tagline "Sacred Poetry from Around the World." I am regularly reminded that the Poetry Chaikhana community is also from around the world -- but I don't share that enough with everyone else. I've started to pay more attention to the web site visitor statistics, and those statistics have inspired me. (Inspired by statistics? Maybe I'm revealing too much of the computer geek in me. :-) I do, afterall, support myself by working as a computer programmer when I'm not posting poetry, commenting on poetry, reading poetry, researching poets, or maintaining the web site.)

Since the beginning of 2008 (when I first started tracking web statistics), the Poetry Chaikhana has had visits from 222 different countries and territories!

It's much easier to list the dozen or so countries that haven't visited the site recently than it is to list those countries that have... but it's much more fun to list those that have! So, here goes! In order of visitor traffic...

We make up quite a community, don't we? Through the Poetry Chaikhana, we are all connected to every part of this planet we share.

The next time a poem touches that warm ember deep in your chest, and your thoughts stop, and your mind clears, and a quiet smile spreads across your face... reach out and feel who else on this planet is feeling exactly the same thing. Could be someone who wears different clothes or different colored skin, someone who speaks with a different accent or an entirely different language, someone who sits or kneels or bows to worship. Reach out and recognize that person as a brother or sister who, like us all, is walking through the human journey, pausing occasionally to sing songs of the Divine.
