Day 21 - T.S. Eliot
Bob Holman & Margery Snyder
From Bob Holman & Margery Snyder, your Guide to Poetry
Thomas Stearns Eliot was the quintessential trans-Atlantic Modernist--born in the US, he studied in France, settled in England, and became a British citizen at the age of 39, saying "My mind may be American but my heart is British."
"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"
This poem, published at the beginning of Eliot’s influential career, carries us from its medieval epigraph (a quote from Dante’s Inferno) through the stream-of-consciousness musings of its narrator into the 20th century. It has worked its way so far into the center of our culture that you will come across many familiar lines as you read it: “Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherised upon a table.... “ have measured out my life with coffee spoons.... “I grow old... I grow old... I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled....”
