PIW 1 March 2011

In this issue of PIW, we present poetry written in English – Irish English, Australian English and Aboriginal English, poetry which embodies cultural and linguistic traditions of specific communities while at the same time exploring the intersections of and the gaps between languages, places and cultures. The Australia domain presents the unique and memorable writing of two remarkable poets, both Aboriginal Australians: Ali Cobby Eckermann and Lionel Fogarty. On the Ireland domain, there is work by Irish writers who live outside of their home country: poet, translator and academic Bernard O'Donoghue and Ailbhe Darcy, whose first collection, Imaginary Menagerie, is out later this year.

Poem of the Month
Fire

Probably I am an ordinary middle-class

believer in individual rights, the word

"freedom" is simple to me, it doesn't mean

the freedom of any class in particular.

Politically naive, with an average

education (brief moments of clear vision

are its main nourishment), I remember

the blazing appeal of that fire which parches

the lips of the thirsty crowd and burns

books and chars the skin of cities. I used to sing

those songs and I know how great it is

to run with others; later, by myself,

with the taste of ashes in my mouth, I heard

the lie's ironic voice and the choir screaming

and when I touched my head I could feel

the arched skull of my country, its hard edge.

[Poetry Chaikhana] Kobayashi Issa - Buddha's body

Here's your Daily Poem from the Poetry Chaikhana --

Buddha's body

By Kobayashi Issa
(1763 - 1828)

English version by David G. Lanoue

Buddha's body
accepts it...
winter rain

- from the website http://haikuguy.com/issa/

============

Thought for the Day:

Psychic stillness is so difficult because it makes us naked
to ourselves.
This is why self-acceptance is essential.
Otherwise, we never give ourselves permission to be still.

Hi Omss -

I could just live on the nourishment of haiku every day. A few lines, so short they're almost incoherent... the way they teeter on the edge of meaning and occasionally slip into the void... Something about that desperate line dares the mind to burst open with insight.

This haiku, for example -- I don't read it as being about enduring uncomfortable weather. There is more than that here. There is acceptance, a quiet contentment, even a welcoming. It is about the recognition of the rightness of things in their season. And that touches the eternal. The Buddha is simply here, always here, always present, and we feel the winter rain is simply passing by for its short moment. The rain touches the Buddha's face, and then moves on. So too the wind, the sun, the rising of grasses, the blooming of flowers. They come. The Buddha sits, smiles, accepts. And the world moves along again in its cycles of life, becoming and unbecoming, while the Buddha remains.

And what is the Buddha's body but us, our very nature? The body arises, the seasons of the self blossom and turn inward again, and through it all there is a still point within us quietly watching, and accepting, and smiling.

Ivan
