| What a fine and noble poem we have today! This passionate Lithuanian poet recounts the satisfaction of a job well done and the reward of setting and achieving specific goals. It's a beautiful poem not only in its language, but in its presumption of man's high ideals. There are plenty of lazy people on our planet, but Vincas chooses to paint us all as desirous of, if not actively committed to, great productivity. Two lines, in particular, linger with me every time I read this poem: "Read the book of life, page by page..." and "do not go into the grave/Without leaving a mark"-possibly the best and only advice a person could ever need! |
