Seeming, at first, a simple poem about the loss of a pair of shoes, Elizabeth's lament carries us to a much deeper place, giving us a glimpse of the speaker's world that goes far beyond her fashion sense. And this line --"When I walked in them, I was the snap/of white tablecloth at a sidewalk café..."-- is going in my Metaphor Hall of Fame!
