I've been a fan of movie star swimmer Esther Williams since my toddler days paddling around Lake Denton in Avon Park, Florida. Today is Esther's birthday--she's 89--and the last time I saw her on TV, she was as beautiful as ever and still swimming. In honor of Esther, I went searching to see if there was a poem about her and, indeed, there was! Two poems invoked her name, in fact--both by Canadian poet Wendy Morton, who is also a fan of Esther's. When I vetoed the first as too sad (I know y'all don't like poems about dying pet dogs, but you should let me share that one some time!), Wendy offered this up as an alternative and it's perfect. Isn't there someone you admire so much that just thinking about meeting them--encountering their glamour, their charisma, their panache--could make life instantly better? I was having a really bad day last week, got lucky enough to find an Esther Williams movie on TV (with Jimmy Durante, no less!), and went to bed with a big smile on my face. I hope this poem keeps a smile on your face all day and, Miss Williams, wherever you are, thank you for all you gave to the world and I hope you have a wonderful day! |
